PORTFOLIO OF RUN-OF-RIVER HYDRO IN UGANDA
CDIL is developing a portfolio of run-of-river small hydro plants in Uganda. The Cresta Hydropower project is a 4MW project located on the Buhindagi River in South-Western Uganda. The Sisi Hydropower project is a 6MW project on the River Sisi in Eastern Uganda, near Mt. Elgon. CDIL has secured permits from the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Uganda (ERA) to conduct feasibility on the sites. Feasibility studies are currently ongoing.
The offtaker of the electricity for both projects will be the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL) under a 20-year power purchase agreement. The projects will provide power for approximately 40,000 households when complete.
CDIL is developing both projects with responsAbility Renewable Energy Holdings (rAREH). rAREH develops, constructs, owns and operates small-scale hydro, biomass, and solar power plants in order to participate in the economic potential of renewable energy in African countries. rAREH’s general partner is the Swiss asset manager responsAbility Investments AG, which specializes in development-related sectors of emerging economies. rAREH’s founding investor is KfW, the German development bank.
The Cresta project is also being supported by the Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company (UECCC), through their Early Stage Transaction Advisory Services program, funded by KfW.
